A report from the red carpet: Sony World Photography Awards

On a warm spring evening in April, the Red Ants, dressed in their finest outfits, headed up to London for the Sony World Photography Awards Ceremony. Held at the Odeon, Leicester Square, the photography event of the year came complete with red carpet, glamorous guests and, of course, cameras flashing as they tried to capture the great and the good who were there to be rewarded for their contributions to the photographic arts.

As we took our seats, the sense of excitement was catching. The audience fell silent as the lights dimmed and the music started. TV presenter and comedian Marc Dolan was our host for the night, and he guided us effortlessly through the award categories. The range and quality of the photography was awe-inspiring, with a thunderous round of applause for each of the winners. It was also a time to reflect on the role photography plays in society – there was a standing ovation for the memory of Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, the two photojournalists who recently lost their lives in Libya.

The after-party, sponsored by iStock, was held in beautiful surroundings at Somerset House and gave us the opportunity to relax with a drink and admire the winners’ pictures first hand.

If you would like to see examples of award-winning photography, the World Photography Organisation showcases stunning images by both amateur and professional photographers.
