Integrated online reporting system

MHRA banner

Brief

The MHRA wanted to create a web based application where ADRs/ yellow cards can be reported by anyone from patients to healthcare professionals, including doctors, pharmacists, nurses and carers.

Red Ant strategy

  • Create an easy to use reporting system that hides the technicalities of the reporting process from end users and integrates directly into the analysis systems in use by the MHRA

Tactics

  • Capture information in a way that is easily followed by members of the public and healthcare professionals (two different routes tailored to audience)
  • Reduce information parsing errors due to incorrect terminology (use of dictionaries and other tools)
  • Provide an experience for the user to encourage appropriate use and re-use in capturing yellow card information

Results

  • Increased reporting of adverse drug reactions
  • Time saving with direct reporting into MHRA analysis tools without any data rekeying

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is an executive agency of the Department of Health and it is responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices work, and are acceptably safe. Run in conjunction with the Commission on Human Medicines, the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme is used to collect information from health professionals and the general public on suspected side effects or adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to a medicine.
